The Torres Strait will be alive with the sounds from the My Island Home Project CD over the weekend as we launch the CD on Radio 4MW in the Torres Straits that morning at 8.30am with the projects own Sylvia Tabau live on the Brekky Bot.
Throughout the weekend the MIHP CD will feature at one of the Straits biggest weekends on the calendar – Torres Strait Cup Football Carnival run by Kaiwaigal Rugby League on TI. Our CD will be heard by people from all communities through the Straits, reflective of the 19 emerging artists, some having travelled from Outer Islands and Cairns to participate in the weeklong songwriting and recording workshop.
If the 300 strong crowd concert on TI back in August is any reflection of the amount of community support the project received, the CD is sure to become one of the Strait’s favourite and well requested song heard on 4MW – The voice of the Straits.
We are proud to be able to share with you the My Island Home Project Compilation CD
Neil Murray – the writer of the iconic song “My Island Home” – a song that has travelled so far and widely – so much so – that it became the reason he was invited to the Torres Strait where he joined local musician Patrick Mau – ‘Mau Power ‘to mentor 19 emerging Indigenous artists for a week of songwriting and recording. Mike Justice and Ben Hense complete the mentoring team, where they record the emerging artists on Thursday Island and produced the music that celebrates family, cultural life and connection to country and sea.

My Island Home Project – Place blo Mepla
My Island Home, a song written by Neil Murray (Warumpi Band) back in the late 80’s, made famous by Christine Anu at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 and more recently covered and styled by Thursday Islands’ own Mau Power. My Island Home is the unofficial anthem of many people from the Torres Strait and provides a focus for a songwriting, singing and recording workshop held on Thursday Island from the 10th – 14th of August 2015. This project was assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body.
19 emerging artists from communities throughout the Torres Strait participated in the weeklong workshop. 5 positions were quarantined for Outer Island Residents only, with flights, accommodation and meal allowances provided through the Torres Strait Regional Authorities’ (TSRA) Common Funding Round for the Cultural, Arts and Heritage Program.
To apply, artists simply upload a 30 second clip of themselves singing, along with some information to the My Island Home Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/myailanhome?ref=hl . Mentors for the project included: Neil Murray, Patrick Mau ‘Mau Power’, Mike Justice and Ben Hense. Aunty Cessa Nakata (Mills Sisters) and Uncle Seaman Dan joined us to mentor the participants and share their journey in the music industry.
All participants completing the project received mentoring from our International and Nationally recognised artists, developed skills in songwriting, singing and knowledge of the industry. All artists receive a fully mastered copy of their original song with 14 of the My Island Home Artists featuring on the compilation CD. The My Island Home Project CD is due to be released mid October on Thursday Island. You can access the music through our Soundcloud. Links will be shared on the day of the launch.
